Light Painting Machine
Project from Josh Sheldon showcases his light painting animation set-up, translating scenes created in 3D software Blender that are replicated with robotic controlled camera and LED:
I made this robot to make light painting animations. Each of the animations I made took between 4 and 12 hours to shoot, one frame at a time. Each frame is 1-3 long exposure photographs of the machine performing the light painting.

Akira (1988) / Production Report / Studio Footage
Akira backgrounds were bought to life using a number of techniques including paint markers, airbrushing and various brushes, some of which were extremely fine. Single hair paint brushes were reportedly used to create much of the detailing on distant Neo Tokyo towers. Apparently, this attention to detail caused friction between Otomo and some of the artists. But the result speaks for itself.
Akira Production Report (1988) / Line Tests / 24fps ‘In Ones’
Amazing line tests from the ‘Akira Production Report’ documentary. 30 years on, Akira is still the only hand-animated feature film to adopt such a high frame rate.
